I made a note from Scot McKnight’s talk this weekend at a leaders retreat at North Point Community Church. I’m not sure I wrote it down exactly, but hopefully you get the idea. Scot said he has a number of bird feeders in his yard that he keeps stocked. Carol and I have five bird feeders and dozens of birds that pay a visit every day. He likened the birds to the people God puts in our lives. He used the example of a blue parakeet that visited his feeders one day. It had apparently escaped from a neighbor’s house. All the other birds shunned the new visitor and watched it with great suspicion. When it squalked they all flew away. The were afraid of it because it was different. But it was a truly beautiful bird. The other birds didn’t see its beauty. They rejected and feared it. Scot then made the statement that really hit home with me. “You can’t choose what birds visit your back yard. You can only choose to feed them.” I like that.
