George Washington Hoffman, born in Chester County, married Rebecca and bought and operated the Eagle Tavern in Uwchland township from 1805 until 1816 when he sold the business and moved westward. He began purchase of a farm in Noblestown, Allegheny County, Pa, just before he died unexpectedly in late 1816. His wife, Rebecca and his brother Isaac, completed the purchase and Rebecca moved to the farm. George and Rebecca had three children; Washington George, Jefferson S., and Matilda. Washington George was so named to prevent confusion between he and his father. Rebecca remarried to Joseph Johnston and they lived on the farm until her death.
